Cork City 1-0 Galway United
Friday, 24 April 2009

Match report from RTE.IE

Cork City continued their impressive form that has seen them win five and draw one of their last six league games, following this victory over Galway in front of a 2,500 crowd at Turner's Cross.

The only goal of the game was scored after 16 minutes when Billy Dennehy was on the end of a fine Cork move for his third league goal this season.

The home side did create other chances with Joe Gamble and Denis Behan going close, while Vinny Faherty had the visitors' best effort.

Paul Doolin's side went into the match on the back of a run which has seen them pick up 13 points from their last 15.

Visitors Galway, who started their campaign with a five game unbeaten run, have stuttered slightly, with just one victory in the last six league matches.

On a night when a full house was viewing the Munster versus Scarlets match, just a few hundred yards away in Musgrave Park, the fans at Turner's Cross were on their feet after 16 minutes when the home side jumped in front.

Midfielder Colin Healy sent Fadruhdin Kudozovic racing down the right and his cross was turned in from close range by in form Dennehy.

Cork, who adopted a positive approach, might have added to their lead on 34 minutes when a Joe Gamble strike was well saved by Galway goalkeeper Barry Ryan.

The visitors, who had to lineout without Sean Kelly, who is on a season long loan from Cork, went close early in the second half when a Vinny Faherty overhead effort flew just wide.

Galway United: Ryan; Conneely, Guthrie, Breen, Davoren; O'Shea, Russell (Edwards, 74) , Cooke, McGrath, O'Brien (Molloy, 87); Faherty.
