Substitute Declan Edwards snatched a late winner, his first goal for Galway, leaving Drogheda five points adrift at the bottom. The on-loan Stockport County striker converted a close range effort to give United their first win in five League matches and their third win of the season.
United were forced into changes from last Tuesday's game. Seamus Conneely missed out through injury so Dave Cooke started for United in the centre and Sean Kelly reverted to right-back.
The Boynesiders had an early scare when Vinny Faherty fired against the bar after good work by Derek O'Brien and Jay O'Shea, but the home side dominated for long spells, despite having no recognised striker due to injuries. Two of their players were late withdrawals before kick-off and they were forced to change their frontmen just before kick-off.
Paul Crowley had several chances for the home side, but was denied a number of times by Galway 'keeper Barry Ryan, who also foiled Paul Shiels in the second half.
Eleven minutes from time, Edwards scrambled in a header from a Derek O'Brien cross.
But the Drogs had a great chance to grab a point late on, but substitute Mark Salmon mis-kicked from close range.
