Match Report from rte.ie

Liam Lynch was the Longford Town hero as the midlanders enjoyed a smashing success at Terryland Park to book their place in the eight of the FAI Ford Cup.

Longford overcame the 23rd-minute dismissal of Neal McKenna to defeat a Galway United side that wasted several opportunities.

Lynch supplied the decisive goal on 83 minutes, and while Galway poured forward in search of a leveller, Longford custodian Danny O'Leary was superb.

A quiet first half featured some decent football from Galway, who were passing the ball smartly and skipper John Russell rifled an 18th minute shot over.

Russell was providing the subtle touches in the centre of the park, and Longford's McKenna saw red for a crude 23rd-minute challenge on the Galway midfielder.

Galway were in the ascendancy, and Derek O'Brien flashed a cross into the Longford area moments later as the visitors survived another scare.

Russell was smashing, creating the space for Seamus Conneely to cross for Iarfhlaith Davoren, who was unable to guide his header on target in a crowded area.

In the last minute of the first half, Vinny Faherty smashed a low shot wide, and the teams went in tied at the interval.

Despite a raft of Galway chances it remained that way until the 83rd minute when Lynch combined with Tom King before booking Longford's place in the quarter-finals.

O'Leary then denied Garry Breen during a hectic climax in which Galway had substitute Dave Cooke sent off in the last minute, and the midlanders held on for an encouraging win.
