Galway United President makes appeal for support

Galway United President Michael D Higgins has appealed to the people of the city and county to get behind the club following the successful appeal which see Sean Connor’s men play in the Premier League for 2011. The new season gets under way on Friday week when United will entertain St Pat’s at Terryland Park as the club commences its 35th season in the League of Ireland.

 

Higgins said now was the time for people to get behind the club and build for the future after the club secured its Premier Division status on appeal having only been granted an A Championship licence. “Now is the time for Galwegians to come out and support the club at its home games,” said Deputy Higgins.

“To have a club playing in the Premier League is of massive benefit to Galway in every way. “It is a source of inspiration to all of those youngsters at the under-age level to know that they can aspire to wearing a jersey for a club in the Premier League,” he said. The Galway United President said it should become a regular part of one’s diary to attend the home games in Terryland

He said there will be a special welcome for old friends from the soccer families in Galway, new youngsters anxious to participate and indeed people of all ages at the opening home game against St.

Patrick’s Athletic on Friday week. The club said it was pleased with the decision of the Independent Licensing Appeals committee to grant the club a Premier Division Licence for the 2011 season.

“The club now looks forward to our first Premier Division match of the season, versus St Patricks Athletic at Terryland Park on Friday 4th March and continuing our long and proud participation in the League of Ireland,” said a statement from the club.
