So, a change of manager, but no change of luck for Galway United. Despite ending that miserable losing streak with a draw in Dundalk on Friday, they suffered the familiar feeling of defeat at UCD.

And, ultimately, that was the result of a deflected strike and an own goal. Worse, the scoreline also ensures Galway can't catch UCD, securing the Students' place in the Premier Division next season.

To give them credit, though, John Brennan's side did look much more assured than in previous encounters. Indeed, they could have been ahead inside the first 15 minutes as Mark Gilmore shot narrowly wide and Eric Brown might have done better with a header from a corner.

What's more, they initially weathered an eventual UCD siege.

After Darren Meenan had squandered a one-on-one and Robbie Benson smacked the bar with a snapshot, Galway shocked the students with the opening goal just after half-time. With the wind howling, Bobby Ryan sent over a corner for Oscar Sibanda to head home.

The Premier Division's bottom side couldn't delay the inevitable, however, even if UCD manager Martin Russell deserves credit for forcing it.

Having brought on Chris Lyons on 61 minutes, the young sub immediately brought an equaliser with his first touch as his skewed shot deflected past Conor Winn.

And, moments later, the turnaround was complete as Lawrence Gaughan unluckily headed the ball past his own keeper.
