Key Players to Watch

• Emma Doherty – Galway United: Emma Doherty has had a stellar start to the 2025 season, scoring three goals in three games and winning the LOIW/SSE Player Of The Month award for March. The Buncrana native has been a spearhead in the United attack and will certainly cause problems for the Wexford backline.

• Ellen Molloy – Wexford: Ireland International Ellen Molloy has been a standout player in the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division for many years now, and this season is no different. Molloy was instrumental in Wexford’s dismantling of Sligo Rovers last week, creating chance after chance and even getting on the scoresheet herself. Usually playing as an advanced midfielder, either centrally or out wide, Ellen can definitely bring danger to any defence she comes up against.

It will be the 7th meeting of the clubs with United only having won one of those matches in the 90 minutes, drawn 3 and lost 2. Two of the “drawn” matches were in each of the All Island Cup semi-finals and on both occasions United qualified via penalties.

Last year’s semi-final was at home but Wexford have a 100% record in the league visiting Galway United, winning on the very first match for Galway United in 2023 thanks to a Ciara Rossiter goal and then last season with two very late goals from, now Galway United striker Ceola Bergin and Ireland International Aoibheann Clancy to end United’s unbeaten start to last season.

Our most recent clash in September last year saw the clubs draw 1-1 live on TG4 but the most memorable moment of the game was a penalty save from now Galway United keeper Jayne Merren from ex United star Jenna Slattery which still causes debate as to whether the ball crossed the line or not!

Therese Kinnevey could equal Jamie Erickson’s club record appearances of 52.

Eve Dossen made her 50th appearance last week, and now Isabella Beletic could hit the half century mark.

Galway United are set to travel to The Showgrounds in Sligo this Saturday evening, in the first Connacht Derby of the season. Both sides are coming into the game after losses, with United on the end of a narrow defeat to Shamrock Rovers at Eamonn Deacy Park and Sligo Rovers suffering a 4-2 loss to Bohemians in Dalymount Park. Galway United sit in third place in the league, with thirteen points after nine games, and Sligo Rovers sit rock bottom with four points from eight games. Sligo’s position in the table this season is a bit of a false one, as they have put in some great performances and been in the vast majority of games. Even beating Shamrock Rovers, who United lost to last week. It’s set to be a huge game up in Sligo as both sides look to get back to winning ways, and there’s no better time to do it than in a Connacht Derby.

Last time out Sligo Rovers was an enthralling game at Dalymount Park. A game which initially saw four goals, and the scoreline at 2-2 in the opening twenty minutes. Bohemians though came out the victors in the end, scoring four, including a lovely goal from Dawson Devoy at the death to seal the deal for Bohs.

 

Key Players to Watch

• Killian Brouder – Galway United: Brouder has been at the club since 2019 and last week made his 160th appearance for the Tribesmen. He’s had a hugely successful start to the 2025 season, earning a nomination for the LOI/SWI Player Of The Month for March. Brouder has been an ever present at the back for United for over half a decade and has developed hugely as a player in recent years, his ability to defend in one on one situations and distribute the ball, both via his feet from the back and also with his hands from throw ins has been vital to United this season.

• Owen Elding – Sligo Rovers: Owen Elding has been a standout for Sligo Rovers this season, he is son of Sligo Rovers legend Anthony Elding who scored an iconic goal for the Bit O’ Red in the FAI Cup Final in 2013. Owen similarly to his father plays up front, and it’s looking like this could be his breakthrough season. The 2006 born striker is certainly one to keep an eye on and will be a challenge for the United defence in The Showgrounds on Saturday.

Player Milestones

Killian Brouder could equal his fellow Newcastle West compatriot, Gary Shanahan. If Brouder plays he is in line for his 161st appearance in Maroon.

Rob Slevin is in line for his 75th appearance 

Moses Dyer will be suspended for the game after picking up five yellow cards this season.
